SEO Meetings

Two more SEObash events upcoming.

by admin on April 14, 2007

As noted in my previous posts, I’ve decided to move ahead with SEO bash. Based on our first event which I feel was a wonderful success (and a lot of fun) and my enjoying the networking at SES NY, I’m going to have two more SEObash events in fairly short order.

NEXT SEOBash: Will be held in Ottawa. Time, date, and location to be announced (timeline probably about 8 weeks out). Actually, I’m looking for suggestions as to the location. Anyone know any good places that can hold say 30 people or so that we can get for free that can also allow us to do some presentations? i.e. a pub, cafe, or restaurant that has a somewhat secluded or seperate area? Centrally located would be good. I’m originally from the Ottawa area, but any places that I’ve frequented in the past, um, well let’s just go along with the idea that they’re not suitable :). I’m also open to offers of others who would be willing to do a presentation on some aspect of SEO/SEM/Affiliate marketing. If that’s you please contact me.

Next SEObash +1: After the upcoming Ottawa roundup, we’ll be doing another one in Toronto. Time, date, location, actually just about anything at all in the way of details, to be posted after the Ottawa SEObash.

I’ll consider adding a Vancouver location to the mixup at some point in the future.

SES NY, secretseo, google snubs

by admin on April 14, 2007

I’ve just returned from SearchEngineStrategies NY. I had a wonderful time hanging out with folks I’ve met through the years at the events - folks that have turned into hard and fast friends and who are free and easy with their advice and assistance. It’s networking events like this that have reaffirmed my belief that there’s a need for grassroots events like seobash.

I picked up some advertising coupons from a PPC advertiser to hand out at our next event. I also hit up Google’s reps for some free handouts….and was snubbed. The lady assured me that they might talk to me if I was in fact a Google advertising professional. But unless I went through that little piece of nothing, they wouldn’t talk to me. It didn’t matter that in some months I’ve spent $50,000US in Google PPC, or even that I was handing this out for free at an event where many new and potential advertisers were going to learn how to use Google adwords. Nope, not a registered advertising professional, no handouts for you. It was totally a corporate blue-suit response. They just couldn’t be bothered. “it’s a corporate thing” she said, “you understand.” Yes, I understand. You’re blowing me off. Got it. S’okay, other PPC advertisers were happy to stip up to the plate and get a piece of some potential free advertising.

I also attended our semi-annual secretseo meeting. Most important meeting revelation - New Shirts! I’ll post some pics shortly. (if you’re wondering what secretseo is, I can’t really say. Because, it’s like, well, a secret. Though as one of the Best of the Web folks pointed out, it’s not much of a secret if we’re all running around with shirts mentioning it.)

I also spent quite some time on my way home thinking about what I was going to do with seobash…and I’ve got some ideas. I’ll be posting about them shortly.
